The title says it all, no post needed!
But actually though, I think having a city flag would be something that could help inspire a local spirit. Like everything I propose I don’t think it’s going to turn everything around on it’s own. Maybe it would be silly, maybe not. Having a flag, a symbol of our pride in our town could be something powerful, a rallying cry.
Could it seem cheesy? Maybe. Could it end up becoming more a symbol of people’s belief in the failures of the town as opposed to a symbol of pride in our town? Very possible. But nonetheless it shouldn’t work.
If it isn’t obvious I’m pretty inspired by the Chicago flag. Not everyone is super into it, yet it’s still there as a symbol of the city. Something they can fly in pride if they so choose.
Flag Design
But I will also put forward that we should use some good Vexillology principles to build our flag. (Vexillology being the study of flags). Our flag should be mostly stripes, bars, stars, and other relatively simple design elements.
Want to see a city flag that did not follow those principles? Here’s Milwaukee’s flag:
And as you can see… It's quite busy. Lots going on. There’s even a little flag within the flag.
We should aim to make a flag that’s simple enough for a child to draw it easily. I know so many easy flag ideas are already taken, and I have no idea what our colors would be, but I think this could be a project for some creative people out in town to work on.
It’s something small, but it could give us something to unite under.
